Causes of Crooked Teeth |
Posted on 4/24/2023 by Nancy Shiba DDS |
Crooked teeth are a common dental issue among children and adults. Teeth that aren't aligned properly can affect your smile and cause oral health problems. For instance, crooked teeth can put more pressure on the jaw muscles, teeth, and gums, resulting in chronic headaches, jaw strain, and Temporomandibular Joint Disorders. This dental condition can occur due to several reasons, such as: Genetics and Heredity Genetics is the most common cause of crooked teeth. If your parents or family members have crooked teeth, you could also have this dental issue. In most cases, it occurs due to the jaw size or the position of the jaw, which is determined by genetics. For instance, you may have small jaws or larger teeth, resulting in overcrowding. Poor Oral Hygiene Poor oral hygiene can contribute to plaque buildup. Over time, this can result in gum inflammation and irritation (gingivitis). If left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, which can result in teeth loosening or falling out. Missing teeth can make the surrounding teeth to shift, causing overcrowding or spacing. Childhood Habits Repetitive childhood habits can also cause crooked teeth. For instance, thumb-sucking exerts pressure on the front teeth, causing changes in the palate. This contributes to protruding teeth which results in an open bite. Prolonged bottle feeding and using pacifiers can also result in improper positioning of your baby's teeth. That's why it is vital to schedule dental visits for your kid. The dentist will examine the baby's teeth and advise you on how to avoid the habits that can affect the teeth' appearance. Injury Facial trauma such as mouth injury can make your jaws shift. When your jaw shifts, the teeth can move out of their normal position. Besides, an injury can make you lose one or more teeth. The remaining teeth may begin to move slowly to occupy the empty spaces, resulting in crooked teeth. Visit our office to learn more about crooked teeth and their causes.... Read more... |
