Digital X-Rays San Jose, CA
At Nancy Shiba, DDS, we will always adopt the best in dental technology when we believe that it will improve our ability to keep our patients healthy and keep our services affordable. Digital x-rays have made a massive impact on the dental industry, allowing us to see into the structures within your mouth with more clarity and higher accuracy.
What is a digital X-ray?
The digital x-ray machine is a device that doesn’t rely on traditional x-ray film. Instead, it functions similarly to a digital camera. Digital x-rays allow us to see in much higher detail than traditional x-rays did.
The Difference Between Traditional and Digital X-rays
You probably remember the traditional x-ray machines, where you had your x-ray taken at the beginning of the dental appointment, and got to see the finished results at the end of your visit. Traditional x-ray machines relied on film that had to be developed to be viewed. If a traditional x-ray didn’t develop correctly, we would have to start the process over again. Some of the most notable differences between traditional x-rays and digital x-rays are:
• |
Digital x-rays develop in only seconds, whereas traditional x-rays would take up to twenty minutes to develop
|
• |
Digital x-rays are viewable immediately on a computer monitor that we have available to share with patients
|
• |
Digital x-rays are presented in high definition, which allows us to zoom in on particular areas of the image
|
• |
Digital x-rays save our patients both time and money
|
• |
Much less radiation exposure when using digital x-ray machines |
That’s right; digital x-rays expose patients to less than one-fifth of the radiation that a traditional x-ray machine did! That makes a big difference in the long run.
Reasons for Digital X-rays
X-rays are a great way for us to stay ahead of any problems that arise in your mouth. With x-rays, we can detect a wide variety of dental health issues. Some of the things that we use digital x-rays to detect include:
• |
Cavity detection before you have pain or sensitivity
|
• |
Growth and development of primary (baby-children's) teeth and permanent adult teeth
|
• |
Potentially impacted teeth, like wisdom teeth or canines
|
• |
Oral cancer, can sometimes be detected on x-rays
|
• |
The eruption of baby teeth
|
• |
As preparation for braces in children and adults
|
• |
To help us plan for dental procedures like implant placement
|
• |
To identify cysts or tumors |
Digital X-rays Are Just Part of Your Visit
It is important that you come in twice a year for your regular dental cleanings and exams, and not just because we take your x-ray during some of these times. Professional dental cleanings are key in keeping your teeth healthy for the rest of your life. We make sure to remove all leftover plaque and tartar that you are not able to remove in spite of careful home care.
