Tooth Extraction

Teeth Extractions in San Jose provided by at

At Nancy Shiba, DDS, we want you to enjoy the use of your teeth for as long as possible, which is why we are so passionate about taking preventive measures to save them from decay and damage. Every once in a while though, accidents happen that are out of our control. Sometimes teeth become so damaged that they cannot continue functioning properly and must be removed. When a tooth must be removed, we will perform what is known as a tooth extraction to remove it from your mouth safely.

Most extractions can be performed in our San Jose office; however, the more complex procedures will sometimes be referred to one of our trusted oral surgeons.

Why are teeth extracted?

The common reasons that teeth are extracted are:

•  Teeth that have experienced severe decay

•  Periodontal disease that has lead to bone and soft tissue loss

•  Teeth that have experienced significant physical trauma and cannot be mended

•  Badly positioned teeth, teeth that have a high likelihood for impaction

•  Non-functional or poorly functioning teeth that have to be replaced with a dental appliance like a bridge, dental implant, or denture

The most common reasons that people end up needing a tooth extraction are extreme decay and sports injuries to the face and mouth. When a tooth suffers from extreme decay, sometimes we can save it if by performing a root canal, which is much more cost-effective than having to face replacing the tooth with an implant or denture.

Sports injuries that result in cracked and chipped teeth that are beyond repair are more common than your might think. For this reason, we have included some information on how preventive measures that you can take to keep your teeth safe at the bottom of the page.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

There are two varieties of tooth extraction; simple and surgical. The first step in preparing you for your tooth extraction is to make sure you are comfortable. We will use a local anesthetic to ensure that you feel no pain or discomfort during the procedure. Occasionally sutures (stitches) are used to help with healing.

Tooth Extraction Post-Operative Instructions

We will review with you all the post-operative instructions to help you have an easier healing time.

Ways to Avoid Needing a Tooth Extraction

The best way to avoid a tooth extraction is to build great at-home oral hygiene habits like brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Don’t forget to come in to see us at least twice a year for normal checkups and cleanings.

If you engage in physical activities or sporting events, always make sure to wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and mouth. Mouthguards are inexpensive and easy to obtain compared to the hassle of having to have a tooth extraction. Ask us about a custom made mouthguard specific to your sport.
