family smilingSleep disorders can have a detrimental effect on a person’s well-being, as the consequential impact of disturbed sleep leads to fatigue and low energy during the daytime. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder, and sleep apnea is notorious for its symptoms which include loud snoring and waking yourself up from finding it difficult to breathe. Sleep apnea can be serious, and patients with sleep apnea should be seen by one of our dentists.

Nancy Shiba, DDS treats sleep apnea, and our professionals can teach you how to live with the disorder. We have a range of treatments, and there will be one that can suit you.

How Can Sleep Apnea Be Treated?

Sleep apnea can be treated in a number of ways, varying in extensivity, depending on how much sleep apnea affects the patient’s sleep. The effectiveness of sleep apnea treatment can be easily measured in how well it allows the patient to sleep. The end goal of treatment is to allow the patient to get an uninterrupted night’s sleep. Custom-fit mouthguards can be used to prevent the symptoms of sleep apnea from occurring. This is achieved by the mouthguard lowering the bottom jaw, which opens up the airways and prevents snoring and the throat from closing.

While it may seem like a relatively simple solution, it can be very effective. Custom-fit mouthguards can be made at our office, and custom-fit mouthguards are slimmer and easier for breathing than mouthguards that can be bought in sports stores. Alternatively, we may refer a patient to an orthodontist if it appears that the patient’s bite is what is causing sleep apnea. Sometimes, if the jaw rests in the wrong position, it can disturb sleep, and cause sleep apnea.

CPAP, which stands for Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure is a machine used for the more extreme cases of sleep apnea, where relief cannot be found through alternative methods, and the risk is high for the user to have serious symptoms. The machine works by having the patient wear a mask, which is attached to the machine, that pumps a constant flow of air into the mouth. This prevents the breathing from stopping, as it would with sleep apnea.

What Causes Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea can either be Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), or central sleep apnea (CSA). OSA is the most common type of sleep apnea and is caused by the malfunction of the throat muscle at the back of the throat, which relaxes and therefore cuts off the airways, causing the patient to wake. Central sleep apnea is similar to OSA, however this type of sleep apnea is caused by miscommunication between the brain and the throat muscles. Sleep apnea symptoms include loud snoring, the constant waking up of oneself during the night, insomnia, and waking up breathless. In the daytime, due to these symptoms, an individual will have headaches, low-energy and trouble staying awake.

Nancy Shiba, DDS can help you treat these symptoms through our range of different treatments. To prevent your sleep apnea, and start getting better sleep, contact our office at (669) 306-7669.
