Getting to Know Periodontal DiseaseThe word periodontal comes from the word “peri,” which translates to “around,” and “dontal,” which means “teeth.” Periodontal means everything around the teeth, including the gum, alveolar bone, periodontal ligaments, and cementum covering the root. In the early stages, the disease only impacts the gums. In severe cases, however, it also affects the supporting tissues. Gingivitis is the gentlest form of this disease. There is zero to little pain during this stage. People with gingivitis will notice how their gums become red, bleed easily, and are swollen. Poor oral health is one of the causes of gingivitis. However, other underlying issues contribute to it. These include aging, diabetes, smoking, genetic predisposition, pregnancy, stress, and hormonal imbalance among others. If gingivitis is left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis. During this stage, there is inflammation in the tissues surrounding the teeth. As the disease progresses, the gums separate from the teeth thus causing the formation of spaces between them. These spaces are called pockets. The pockets then become deeper and more tissues around the gum as well as the bone are destroyed. Sooner or later, the teeth loosen and must be extracted. Untreated Gum Disease Leads to More than Losing Your TeethStudies suggest that untreated periodontal diseases can pose a great threat to your overall well being. Accordingly, it may increase the danger of heart disease and clogged arteries. It can also worsen an existing heart condition. Blocked arteries due to periodontal problems also increase the danger of certain types of strokes. Patients already suffering from diabetes may have additional issues controlling their blood sugar level if they have periodontal problems. The bacteria involved in this disease may also lead to lung diseases or worsen lung conditions. If a patient is pregnant, it can cause premature births and give birth to infants with low birth weight. Do not let periodontal disease threaten your health and quality of life.
