Caring For Your Implants

Implants provided by in San Jose, CA at

couple smilingDental surgery generally includes some care instructions both prior to and following treatment. The surgical placement of dental implants can require multiple steps and a change in your hygiene routine for optimum stability and long term success. At Nancy Shiba, DDS our team will walk you through the tips, guidance, and expectations to help you navigate both the immediate and continued guidance for dental implant treatment.

Restoring missing teeth with dental implants is a fantastic option that has much of the dental world excited. Long term studies have shown implants to be the most successful tooth restoration option. To be effective, we rely on your body to heal naturally at a reasonable rate. Healing includes both the soft tissue and the hard tissue. The implant includes a threaded end that is sunk into the bone material. The threads are designed to capture a large amount of bone surface area. As the bone heals around the device, it grows around the threads firmly securing the bone to the implant device. If this healing step does not occur, the surgical treatment fails. Part of our planning process before treatment is to make predictions on how successfully the bone will heal and grow.

Preparing for Dental Implant Placement

Proper healing is necessary for implant treatment to be successful. We can assess and make predictions on the effectiveness of surgery through better understanding of the patient’s medical and personal history. We will ask about known health issues, medications you are taking, and other activities such as smoking or alcohol consumption. We can then work with the patient, or their physician, to make changes if needed before surgery.

In addition to healing, we will also want to help the patient gain control of any active gum disease that they may be experiencing. Gum disease is a bacterial infection, and Infection in the mouth can disrupt the healing process.

Following Dental Implant Placement

Following the placement of your dental implant, or multiple implants, we will provide you with care instructions. Immediate care will include looking for signs of infection or unusual bleeding. Continued care will include brushing and flossing with a daily routine to keep the area free of bacteria. This routine is no different than the recommended daily care for natural teeth. We will suggest that you:
•  Brush Twice a Day: Continued brushing every morning and evening is still the best way to combat oral disease. We may recommend a spinning, or rotary, brush for increased plaque removal. Taking extended time in your nightly routine following a day of normal eating is the most critical to your care.
•  Floss: Flossing removes stuck foods and debris from between your teeth. Find the flossing solution that works best for you. This may include waxed or unwaxed thread, flossing sticks, or a water agitator. Some find that they prefer flossing in front of a tv or in the shower. We suggest finding the right time and place that will help you stick with your routine.
•  Drink Water: Your body has a natural cleaning system for your mouth, known as saliva. As we age, many begin producing less saliva. The best way to add to this natural cleaning is to drink adequate water each day. Water contributes to washing away debris and plaque.
