Can Unhealthy Mouth Lead to Weight Gain?

Posted on 6/20/2022 by Nancy Shiba DDS
Can Unhealthy Mouth Lead to Weight Gain? You may not realize it, but your oral health can significantly impact your weight. Believe it or not, there is a strong connection between the two. If you are struggling to lose weight, it may be worth checking your oral health to see if that is the root of the problem.

Connection Between Oral Health and Weight Gain

Good oral hygiene is crucial for a pretty smile – it is also essential for overall health. Numerous studies have shown a connection between oral health and weight gain. For example, research has found that people who are obese are more likely to suffer from gum disease. In turn, gum disease can lead to inflammation, linked to an increased risk of obesity. Additionally, poor oral hygiene can cause bad breath, a turnoff for potential mates. It could lead to social isolation, which is also associated with weight gain. Therefore, it is clear that taking care of your teeth and gums is not just good for your mouth – it is also suitable for your waistline.

How To Take Care Of Your Oral Health?

There are a few simple things you can do to take care of your oral health. First, brush your teeth two times a day with a fluoride-based toothpaste. Also, floss them daily to remove plaque and bacteria from between your teeth. Finally, see your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and checkups. By taking these easy and simple steps, you can improve your oral health and weight. One should also eat healthily and exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight. If you are struggling with weight, talk to your doctor or dentist about your concerns. They can help you develop a plan to improve your oral health and reach your desired weight.
