Strategies to Manage Dental Health in the ElderlyCaregivers need to have a basic understanding of symptoms and treatments concerning top dental problems in the elderly. Dental health amongst seniors can be a challenge but certainly conquerable. The aging process often comes with a rise in health conditions that hurt dental health. Advise your loved ones to brush their teeth with toothpaste containing fluoride at least twice a day to help prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Older adults should use a soft to medium toothbrush. You may have to remind them to replace it when it gets out of shape.

Common Dental Problems in the Elderly

Tooth decay can cause cavities and white spots, which leads to the exposure of the nerves causing sensitivity and pain and may also lead to loss of the tooth affected. Tooth decay can result from the consumption of sugary food, which are converted bacteria into tartar and can also be caused diseases like cancer, diabetes, and anemia. Tooth decay can be prevented by low or no consumption of sugar intake, regularly brushing teeth with a recommended toothpaste, gurgling mouthwash frequently, and regular dental check-ups.

Inflammation of the gum refers to gingivitis caused by a buildup of bacteria on the gum and can evolve into periodontitis. Periodontal disease affects the gum and is a result of plaque. It is not painful at first but gets painful at the latter stages .as the pain begins, the tooth detaches from gum which can easily lead to tooth loss. Luckily periodontal diseases are treatable by regularly visiting the dentist.

The gums shrink away from the teeth. Receding gums may result in a gradual and insidious condition in their presentation—this condition is caused by periodontitis and failure to brush teeth properly. However, the following can be contributing factors as well.
