Will Your Dental Implants Affect Your MRI

Posted on 5/23/2022 by Nancy Shiba DDS
Will Your Dental Implants Affect Your MRIIf you are scheduled for an MRI, you must let your doctor know if you have dental implants. Dental implants can sometimes cause problems with MRI images, which could lead to an incorrect diagnosis. Here is what you should know.

MRI and Dental Implants

In recent years, there is some concern shown about the safety of using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with individuals who have dental implants. Some studies have suggested that dental implants can interfere with MRI images and cause additional artifacts, hindering a physician's ability to make an accurate diagnosis. However, other scientific research has indicated that these concerns may be overblown. Numerous studies have shown that MRI scans are generally not affected by implants or other dental hardware and can still provide valuable information to clinicians.

What is MRI Safe Implants?

If you are concerned about whether or not your dental implants will be affected by an MRI scan, you may want to ask your dentist about "MRI safe" implants. These implants are made from materials that are less likely to cause problems with MRI images. For example, some implants are made from titanium instead of steel, which is less susceptible to the magnetic forces used in MRI scans.

Always Talk to Your Doctor

If you are scheduled for an MRI in the near future, it is always important to let your doctor know about any medical devices or implants. It includes things like artificial joints, pacemakers, and, of course, dental implants. Your doctor will then be able to take the necessary precautions to ensure that your MRI is as accurate as possible. In most cases, it means making sure that the dental implants are adequately secured before the scan.

Contact our dental clinic if you want to learn more about dental implants or MRI safety. Our dentists at the clinic will be happy to answer any of your questions related to dental implants or MRI scans.
