What are the Main Causes of Oral and Dental Diseases?Your oral and dental health is essential and significantly contributes to your overall well-being and health. Poor oral hygiene results in dental caries, gum diseases, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss. Having poor oral health for an extended period has been associated with various health conditions like diabetes, oral cancer, and heart diseases. Here are some of the main causes of oral and dental diseases:

Poor Oral Hygiene

If you don't brush and floss your teeth daily, lingering sugars and food particles will remain in your teeth. This can lead to tooth decay due to bacterial growth. The bacteria damage the enamel, leading to loss of gum tissues, bone, and eventually the tooth.

Tartar Build-up

If food particles accumulate in your teeth for an extended period, they form tartar or calculus. This crusty deposit traps stains on your teeth, causing discoloration. The calculus will inflame your gums, resulting in gum disease.

Poor Diet

Eating and drinking sugary foods and beverages will do more harm to your oral health than good. Sugar is known to lower your mouth pH and attract harmful bacteria in your mouth. This will make your teeth more prone to tooth decay and gum disease. Doctors recommend you take more fruits and vegetables instead of snacks. Fruits and vegetables are rich in calcium that boosts strong and healthy teeth and gums.

Use of Tobacco Products

Chewing or smoking tobacco-based products increases your risk for gum disease. Research shows that smokers are at a higher risk of getting gum disease than non-smokers. This is because smoking lowers your immune system, making it weak to fight tooth and gum infections. Besides, if you have damaged gums and continue smoking, these gums might not heal.
