How Your Body Can Suffer if You Ignore Regular Dental Care

How Your Body Can Suffer if You Ignore Regular Dental CareOral health is very important for your overall well-being. Without good oral health, you risk various medical conditions that can affect your health. Knowing the various risks associated with ignoring regular dental care will help you understand why basic oral hygiene is vital.

Risk of Heart Disease and Stroke

Gum disease, a condition caused by poor dental care, is linked to an increased probability of heart disease. Individuals with an advanced form of gum disease (known as periodontitis) have twice the risk of stroke and heart disease. The narrowing of arteries causes the risk associated with gum disease. These arteries are responsible for allowing bacteria to travel through your gums and mouth into the bloodstream.

The bacteria contain deposits of proteins that cause the formation of blood clots. These clots will clog the artery and increase the chances of a heart attack. Bacteria from your mouth can also travel to other arteries responsible for transporting blood to the brain. When this happens, you could suffer a stroke. Both of these conditions are deadly and could result in loss of life.

Risk of Diabetes

Ignoring dental care also increases the risk of diabetes. Studies show that more than 90 percent of people suffering from diabetes have also suffered from oral conditions like gum disease. This happens because diabetic people have a higher risk of gum infection. Gum disease and diabetes work in a two-way connection: gum disease increases the risk of diabetes, and diabetes contributes to the risk of gum disease. Therefore, taking good care of oral health is crucial in preventing such conditions.

Respiratory Problems

You also risk developing respiratory problems due to poor oral health. This happens when the bacteria that cause gum diseases enter your lungs and cause damage. Visit our offices for more information on the risks of ignoring oral health.
