Does Different Types of Dental Fillings Exists?

Posted on 10/11/2021 by Nancy Shiba DDS
Does Different Types of Dental Fillings Exists? There are four kinds of fillings, but the most frequent are amalgam and composite fillings.

Amalgam fillings: Also known as platinum fillings, these include more elements beyond just silver. They are made up of an amalgam or combination of silver, copper, and tin combination particles and molecular mercury. There is a possibility of poisoning with mercury amalgam fillings. You should not get a mercury amalgam filling if you are expectant, expecting to become pregnant, or nursing, under the age of six, or have any other conditions.

Composite fillings are popular among patients, so the color may frequently be suited to the neighboring teeth. They are constructed of a mix of acrylic and ceramic resins. If you need more information on other types, don't hesitate to call us.

When should you change your fillings?

You could be lucky enough never to require a new filling. However, with time, a filling may fracture or wear down to the point that it is no longer safeguarding the tooth from additional decay. Often a packing slips out and has to be refilled. You may not recognize when a filling first develops issues, but our dentist should be able to detect concerns during a routine visit. Our dentist will use an explorer to probe around the borders of the filling to ensure that it is still glued to the tooth and to check for any areas where microbes can enter the tooth and cause extra damage. For more details, seek medical help, or contact us.

Can my diet have an impact on how long my fillings last?

Sugary meals are one of the most important indicators of how prolonged your fillings last. Sugar can facilitate the growth of biofilms on your fillings, resulting in new cavities beneath preexisting fillings as well as on hitherto healthy teeth. Smacking down on hard candies, nuts, ice, or other hard items can cause your fillings and teeth to wear out faster. Schedule a consultative session with us for more information.
