Why Are Oral Cancer Rates Rising?

The oral cancer rates are on the rise. They've increased for the past eight years. It is good to take time to be aware of this trend, and to reduce the risk factors in your life associated with oral cancer. Prevention goes a long way toward avoiding oral cancer.

Causes of Oral cancer

Several causes of oral cancer have been documented. The primary cause of oral cancer includes smoking. If you use smokeless tobacco, there are risks as well to oral cancer. Chewing, dipping, or snuffing tobacco can cause oral cancer too. Everything inside the mouth can be affected by these habits. Cancer can develop in the cheeks, gums, an even in the lining of the lips.

Men develop oral cancer twice as much as women. However, excessive alcohol intake by either gender can cause oral cancer. Too much sun, especially at a young age, can also lead to oral cancer. Sometimes genetics can be considered a factor as well.

Oral Cancer Risks

Since most cases of oral cancer are related to tobacco use, it would seem that more people are using tobacco. However, if someone is choosing to use tobacco, neglect a healthy diet including fruits and vegetables, and drink alcohol, this person is highly susceptible to oral cancer. These are the three primary risk factors, and any combination of them can increase your risk of oral cancer.
