Bring Your Dental Records With You When You Move

A woman smiling and shaking hands with her dentist and a dental hygienist during her first visit.Moving is a stressful time. There's so much to pack, organize, and remember. But amidst the chaos, it's important to not forget one crucial detail: your dental records. These records are essential for maintaining good oral health, especially when you're seeing a new dentist.

Why Are Dental Records Important?

Your dental records are like a medical history for your teeth. They contain a wealth of information about your past dental care, including:

•  Past treatments: This includes fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, extractions, and other procedures you've had.
•  X-rays: These images show the health of your teeth, gums, and jawbone, allowing your new dentist to assess your current oral health status.
•  Medical conditions: If you have any medical conditions that could affect your dental health, like diabetes or heart disease, your records will note them.
•  Medications: Your records will list any medications you're taking, including over-the-counter medications and supplements, which can impact your dental treatment.

This information helps your new dentist:

•  Get a complete picture of your dental health: This allows them to create a personalized treatment plan that addresses your unique needs.
•  Prevent unnecessary procedures: Your records can show if you've already had a particular procedure, preventing unnecessary repetition.
•  Identify potential problems early: By reviewing your past history, your dentist can identify potential problems early on, allowing for prompt treatment and a better chance of successful outcomes.

How to Get Your Dental Records

Getting your dental records is usually a straightforward process. Simply contact your current dentist and request a copy of your file. They may ask you to fill out a release form and pay a small fee for copying and postage.

Some dentists offer electronic copies of records, which can be helpful if you're moving long distances. However, it's always a good idea to have a hard copy on hand for your own reference.

Taking Your Records with You

Once you have your dental records, pack them carefully and take them with you when you move. This will ensure that your new dentist has all the necessary information to provide you with the best possible care.

Moving is a busy time, but don't let your oral health fall by the wayside. Bringing your dental records with you is a simple step that can make a big difference in maintaining your healthy smile.
