Diet and Dental Health

Close-up of healthy teeth and gums at Nancy Shiba, DDSYour food choices significantly influence oral health. An optimal diet provides teeth and gums the nutrients they need while limiting sugar and acid attacks. Simple adjustments make your mouth healthier.

Drink Plenty of Water

Staying well hydrated is crucial for protecting teeth. Water stimulates saliva to wash away food debris and neutralize damaging acids naturally. Drinking water also prevents dry mouth and the subsequent cavities and gum disease it causes.

Eat Crunchy Fruits and Vegetables

The fibrous texture of produce like apples, carrots, cucumbers, and celery helps clean teeth and gums while stimulating beneficial saliva. Their vitamins and minerals also strengthen tissues. Just be sure to rinse with water after to prevent lingering acidity.

Choose Dairy for Calcium

Milk, yogurt, and cheese are rich sources of calcium for building and maintaining strong enamel. Go for low-fat versions to avoid extra saturated fat. Calcium-fortified non-dairy alternatives are great options too.

Pick Lean Proteins

Fish, poultry, legumes, eggs, and nuts provide phosphorus for healthy teeth and gums. They also have vitamin B3 (niacin), which research suggests helps prevent gum disease. Choosing leaner proteins is best.

Avoid Excess Sugar

Bacteria feed on sugar to produce enamel-eroding acid. Frequent exposure to sweets, soda, and juice promotes decay. Limiting sugary foods and drinks prevents damage. Save sweets for occasional treats.

Minimize Acidic Items

Citrus, wine, carbonated drinks, and other acidic products can wear away enamel over time. Have these in moderation, followed by rinsing water or milk. Wait before brushing as acids soften enamel.

Discuss Supplements with Your Dentist

Certain nutritional supplements may benefit the mouth. For example, vitamin C aids gum healing, while some teas have natural antimicrobial effects. Discuss options with your dentist to ensure safety and efficacy.

Conclusion
You can eat your way to a vibrant, healthy smile with knowledge and minor adjustments. An optimal diet full of tooth-strengthening nutrients provides lifelong preventive power.
