How to Take Care of Dentures

Posted on 5/8/2023 by Nancy Shiba DDS
How to Take Care of DenturesDentures are an effective way to restore the aesthetic and functioning of your teeth. It is a good option if you have multiple missing teeth. Whether tooth loss results from injury, tooth decay, or gum disease, dentures can help you smile in public. While these false teeth are strong and long-lasting, they are still susceptible to damage. In this case, you need to learn how to take care of them. Here are 3 denture care tips to ensure that they last long.

Pay Attention to Your Overall Oral Health

Good oral hygiene should be your priority if you want your dentures to last long. Even if you lack natural teeth, you must maintain good cleaning habits to avoid build-ups. For instance, if you ignore brushing your tongue or gums, bacteria will build up along the gum line, which can irritate the gums. This can cause bleeding and inflammation of the gums, the early signs of periodontal disease. If left untreated, the gums and jawbone may deteriorate, resulting in ill-fitting dentures. Dentures that do not fit properly are also prone to damage. In this case, it is good to take care of your mouth. This may involve brushing your tongue, the roof of the mouth, and gums. Also, be sure to rinse your dentures after every meal.

Remove the Dentures When Sleeping

Your gum tissues require some time to recover, and during sleep is the best time to achieve this. In addition, many people grind their teeth at night, which can destroy dentures. That's why removing your dental prosthesis when going to bed is a good idea. Be sure to clean and store them in a moist place. This may include a denture solution to prevent them from losing their shape.

Schedule Dental Appointments

Regular dental checkups should be a priority for everyone with dentures. During the appointment, a dentist will inspect your oral health and dentures. This helps to spot early signs of denture-related infections or irritation. If the dentures require adjustments, the professional can reline them to prevent oral issues.
