3-D CBCT Scans: How Do They Work? Are They Safe? Find Out!A 3D CBCT scan is an advanced dental technology for diagnosing and treating oral health conditions. It speeds up diagnosis and improves treatment outcomes. When you go to receive your treatment at a dental office, a dentist may utilize a CBCT scan. It would be paramount if you know what this important equipment is and what it does.

What is a 3D CBCT Scan?

CBCT, which denotes Cone Beam Computed Tomography, is a special X-ray or scan machine that projects x-rays from multiple angles to get detailed visuals of your gums, jaw, and teeth. The beam penetrates your oral cavity and generates images of soft tissue, bone, and nerve pathways.

It applies the same principle as a CT scan, but a CBCT machine uses a cone beam to take x-ray images. The cone design is more compact, making it suitable for examination at the dentist's office.

After projecting X-rays, a computer processes the radiation to create accurate impressions of your mouth. A single CBCT scan is enough to generate precise images of the craniofacial region.

Are 3D CBCT Scans Safe?

A CBCT scan procedure is painless and safe for diagnosing patients in a dental office. They generate less radiation than a conventional x-ray machine. The exposure only lasts a few minutes, and the amount of radiation is unlikely to cause long-term health effects.

Dental Applications of CBCT Scans

CBCT scans are invaluable diagnostic tools, dentist use them where regular dental X-rays are not effective at providing accurate visuals. Our dentist may recommend the procedure to assess bone density or tissue damage.

The CBCT scan's accuracy makes it ideal for formulating effective treatment plans. CBCT images can provide precise visuals for planning surgical procedures for wisdom teeth removal. It can diagnose jaw tumors and TMJ disorders and assess the tooth's structure.

The imaging process also facilitates the accurate placement of dental implants. It ensures high precision to minimize side effects and pain after treatment. Call our dental clinic to schedule a consultation with our dentist.
