How to Get Used to Wearing Dentures

How to Get Used to Wearing DenturesIf you have missing teeth, you need to replace them for multiple reasons, including the preservation of your oral and dental health structure. Dentures are an ideal non-invasive missing tooth replacement option. However, they can be quite uncomfortable to wear as they sit over your existing dental structure. Here are a few tips to help you get used to wearing dentures.

Clean Your Gums

Your dentures go over your gums, but that doesn't mean that they protect your gums from bacteria and plaque. You will have to clean your gums regularly for optimal oral health maintenance. Failure to do so can cause a sticky layer/film to form over the gums, which makes wearing dentures very uncomfortable. It also causes odor problems in the mouth; thus, making cleaning your gums very important.

Brush Your Dentures Daily

Treat your dentures like you would your natural teeth and follow the same hygiene regimen. Brush them twice a day, and remove any pieces of food stuck in between teeth using floss. If you don't brush your dentures regularly, they may end up getting stained or discolored.

Keep them Moisturised

Dentures need to be kept moisturized at all times, or they may dry out and crack. They can also shrink, making it harder to fit them over your dental structure. Make sure you submerge them in a glass of water when you don't have them on.

Practice Talking

Dentures are an extra device in the mouth that sits over the teeth. They may cause speech issues in the beginning, making it harder to pronounce some words as your mouth adjusts to the new fixture. You should try to practice speaking with dentures on so that you may relearn how to position your tongue to pronounce certain words correctly.

Give Yourself Some Time

You will eventually get used to wearing dentures, and they will start to feel natural in the mouth. Until then, keep practicing, take care of your oral hygiene and your dentures.
