What Is The Healing Period After A Dental Crown Procedure?

If you are considering dental crowns, you may have a few concerns about whether the procedure is painful, the recovery period, or even the dos and don'ts. The best part, however, is that the recovery period after the dental crown procedure is relatively short even though it may involve some minor inconveniences. The risks and complications after the dental procedure can be compared to other dental procedures, and therefore, the same precautions may be required for quick and safe healing.

Crown Placement Process

The crown placement process involves two stages. A patient undergoes an exam at the first appointment. Here, the dentist checks the root of the teeth and the surrounding bone tissue of the area to be treated. Once the dentist finds that the area is healthy, a numbing agent is administered. The dental professional reshapes the affected root to accommodate the implant.

After that, an impression has recorded that aids with the crown fabrication. It may take approximately 2 weeks to have the permanent crown ready. In the interim, the dentist places a provisional dental crown to encase the already prepared tooth.

The Healing Period

After the dentist has placed the final crown over the abutment tooth, you are advised not to consume hot drinks and hard foods until when all the tooth sensation will return. These foods and drinks can lead to accidental biting or burning of your tongue. You will also be advised to evade sticky foods for up to 24 hours. This period allows the crown to cement to the natural tooth, thus preventing it from getting out of the correct position or becoming loose.

It is common to experience post-procedure inflammation that leads to pain or increased sensitivity. It is recommended to use topical analgesics or toothpaste that reduces tooth sensitivity. The healing process however takes a few days to 3 weeks.
